Over the years, I have written a number of bespoke scripts for users. These have usually been short scripts which do simple things and which are little effort to develop. If users have ideas for scripts, they are welcome to pitch them to me. If the idea is likely to be of use to a wide spectrum of the TEM community and it entails little effort on my part, then I'll probably be happy to write it.
If users want something a bit more specialised, which entails a lot of work or is of limited general appeal, then I might consider writing it if there is scope to collobarate on a software project which ultimately leads to a publication.
Please send your ideas for script development to: Dave Mitchell (in your email program remove the nospam from the end of the address to make it work).
Users who seek software tools which are likely to be highly processor intensive, will almost certainly require dll (dynamic linked library) development. This is additional code wriiten in C++, which is compiled into a binary file, and is therefore executed orders of magnitude faster than a script. I have written a number of dlls but it is pretty hard work. A far better option is to contact a commercial developer who does this sort of thing for a living such as HREM Research Inc. Dr Kazuo Ishizuka (Director) has developed a number of outstanding commercial and freeware tools for DigitalMicrographâ„¢.
Since 2008, Dave has worked on three fixed-term contract positions, establishing new microscopy capabilities. This work typically involves designing/supervising room/building fitout, supporting instrument installation, optimising building services and instrument performance, developing operating and management protocols, training technical staff, developing and rolling out advanced research capabilities, developing microscopy-based research proposals, training and supporting students and developing and supporting an external /commercial client-base. If you require any advice/assistance with a new installation, please contact Dave at the above email address.
